In 2016, that weekend just happened to be one of the hottest in recent record. With heat index temperatures upwards of 105 degrees, I excitedly faced the day with a hat and a cooler full of water. The water lasted an hour and the shoot six!
As the hours progressed, it was evident that the heat and time investment were worth it because the opportunity for dynamic shots was fantastic. The funny thing, the best shots of the day weren’t of the actual skim competition, but the skimboarders taking their practice rides.
Sitting on my long ago empty cooler, I positioned my telephoto lens just beyond where I thought action, or in many cases “tricks,” would occur and waited for the magic to happen. The best amateur skimboarders in the world didn’t disappoint and I’m grateful.
